PHOTO STORY
Taiwan

I have been to Taiwan more times than I can count given family ties, but it still feels foreign every time. There's always something new and it certainly helps that it has one of the best street food scenes in the world.

These photos are taken from trips between 2014 - 2018 from Taipei and its surrounding cities in the northern region.

Many guidebooks talk about the Taiwanese Night Markets and they are great, but what I love more is how Taiwanese start the day with comfort food from fried dough and savoury spring onion pancakes to flakey Chinese pastries and bao. My childhood favourite were the ham and egg sandwiches on white bread washed down with hot nǎi chá (milk tea)

Taiwan is a country of duality; both modern and traditional, refined and grungy at the same time.

You can splurge on "Champagne of tea" at Alishan to Dom Perignon showers in Xinyi district, it's an adult playground, street food haven, nature escape and a beacon of culture connected by some of the fastest trains in the world.

FUN FACT: National Palace Museum's (pictured above) permanent collection includes 8,000 years of Chinese art history and is also the largest collection of Chinese art in the world.

Taiwan's multiple identities span beyond the China dilemma, from NBA to remnants of Japan's 50-year colonisation, both evident in Taiwan's pop culture and fashion. What I do really enjoy is Taiwan's design language which combines both traditional Chinese and modern Japanese design principles, forming a style that is uniquely Taiwanese.
